Zofran Side Effects

Zofran is an anti-nausea medication that has been prescribed off-label during pregnancy and has been associated with birth defects in babies, including cleft lip and palate and heart defects. The FDA has issued safety warnings about deadly heart problems, such as abnormal heart rhythm called Torsade de Pointes.

What is Zofran?

Zofran (ondansetron), created GlaxoSmithKline, is a drug used to reduce nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing chemotherapy. It is also used in lower doses to patients after surgery. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1991. Zofran is a 5-HT3 serotonin receptor inhibitor.

Zofran and Pregnancy

Zofran has been prescribed by doctors for off-label uses, to prevent vomiting and nausea for pregnant women in their first trimester. The first trimester of pregnancy is a critical time for fetal development, which is when many birth defects occur. Zofran was not approved by the FDA for morning sickness. Zofran was linked to a 30% increased risk of birth defects and twice the risk of heart defects according to a study out of Denmark in August 2013.

Zofran Pregnancy Side Effects

Some side effects of the drug include heart defects, birth defects, Atrial septal defect, heart murmur, cleft lip, cleft palate, jaundice, kidney defects, life-threatening complications, chest pain, ventricular, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, Torsades de Pointes, fatigue, headaches, fever, diarrhea, constipation and more.

FDA Warnings for Zofran
